You don't have to spend much time in Boise to start hearing references to an area called THE North End. You may not even have to visit Boise to hear mention of THE North End. So what is this place mentioned so often. It is located between downtown Boise and the base of the foothills to the north. The first suburb in Boise with an eclectic variety of home styles ranging from Tudor, classic Craftsman , Queen Anne style and even a few Art Deco models thrown in. This is the only neighborhood in Ada county where a Historic district has been declared and the architecture is preserved. In 2008 the American Planning Association (APA) designated Boise's North End one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods.

One of the features that make the North End unique and appealing is the small area of restaurants, stores and coffee shops called Hyde Park right in the heart of the north end. The tree lined streets of the neo-classic neighborhood call out for a stroll. 11 acre Camels Back park sitting against the foot hills and the north end of Hyde Park is a great place to picnic,play with kids, sledding in the winter and hike in the summer.

Stately Harrison Boulevard is not to be missed and is probably the most streets most populated by ghost and goblins come Halloween. This street goes all out for this holiday and is something that must be experienced at least once.

 

The Boise area is committed to preserving its historical homes and neighborhoods. A walk down either Harrison Boulevard  or Warm Springs Avenue affords the chance to view a wide variety of home styles, from the grand Mansions to the craftsman cottages.

 

The Boise Tour train is also go good way to view many of these home and neighborhoods while learning a bit about the history of the area, The Tour Train runs seasonally, hop aboard in front of the Historical Museum in Julia Davis Park.

 

Boises North End is the largest historical district in the area with may homes listed on the National Registry of Historical Homes. Hyde Park is often considered the Heart of the North End. This lively area offers many restaurant (most with outdoor dinning options) and shopping choices.

 

Preservation Idaho, based in Boise is dedicated to helping individuals and organizations preserve buildings with historical significance through both large smaller preservation assistance programs, designed to garner public support for a preservation issue in Idaho communities.

 

Endangered historic sites are defined as those sites or buildings, 50 years of age or older (newer if a significant historic event has occurred there), which are currently threatened by abandonment, neglect, overuse, poor planning, demolition, or other human or environmental factors.

 

The annual Heritage Homes Tour features select homes in various historic residential areas of Boise. The purpose of this tour is to promote public awareness of Boises rich heritage of buildings, neighborhoods, and landscape. Historic places represent a snapshot in time, a reminder of the path we have taken. The homes that are showcased in the Heritage Homes Tour are, in a sense, public places that each of us can enjoy and appreciate. Preservation also sponsors the ever popular Bar and Brothel tour and the annual Orchid and Onion awards to recognize jobs well done and for those who have contributed to urban blight.
